The Memorial Fund reaches $60,000

With a large number of  participants  in the Memorial Reception held on May 25, we generated  a surplus of as much as JPY 123, 856. In addition, we received  donations of JPY 120,000 from 8 individuals among the invited guests .  The committee recently sent a check of $2,419 to the University of California, Berkeley Foundation to be credited to “The Shoshichi Kobayashi Memorial Fund.” On behalf of the Organizing Committee and the Kobayashi Family, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the participants and generous donors.

The Memorial Fund was established last September immediately after the passing of  Shoshichi, with the purpose of providing financial support to international graduate students in the Mathematics Department of UC Berkeley.   As of July 31, 2013,   as many as 134 individuals and one corporation (with a matching  gift to the contribution made by its employee) have made donations of a total of $58,300.   For those affiliated with UC Berkeley, the Chancellor’s Challenge Matching Gift Program for Student Support is in effect until the end of December 2013.   This matching gift program is applicable to Berkeley campus donors including active or retired faculty or staff, surviving spouses, partners, and current students. Gifts from eligible donors will be matched up to $250,000. This program is not available to alumni and friends of the University.

Prof. Arthur Ogus, Chair of the Department, remarks, “We are very grateful to the family and many friends and colleagues of Professor Kobayashi who have contributed to The Shoshichi Kobayashi Memorial Fund  at UC Berkeley. The overwhelming response is a wonderful tribute to Professor Kobayashi and his legacy in the Department of Mathematics. We look forward to providing financial assistance to deserving international graduate students through this fund for many years to come. “
